Death By Simplification

September 22nd, 2008 by Jack Rugile - 5 Comments - Posted in Miscellaneous

Death Chalk OutlineA few weeks ago I wrote a post about what the definition of simple is. Simplicity is the opposite of complexity. Things that are complex have many complicated parts and things that are simple have a few basic parts… or no parts at all.

It got me to thinking, what is the maximum simplicity a person can reach? In our quest for simple living, where do we draw the line? Is it possible to simplify yourself to death? Wouldn’t that be the ultimate simplicity? Non-existence!

Death by simplification. It sounds like some strange method of torture. Think of all the things you would not have to worry about:

  • No bills.
  • No need for money.
  • No work.
  • No stress.
  • No need for food.
  • No need for water.
  • No effect on the environment.
  • No relationships.
  • Etc…

Ok, the answer is clear. We all must end our lives to reach maximum simplicity.  I should start simplification suicide movement!

I am just kidding! Don’t end your life. I was simply trying to find the humor in the fact that you can stress and complicate your life to the point of death, but you can do the same by ultra simplifying your life as well.

After giving it all some thought, I’ve attempted to define my simplicity goals. How far do I want to go with my simple living? And what things are worth keeping a little complex (like being alive!). Let’s find that balance.

Define Your Goals

Defining your goals for simplifying your life is incredibly important. And so is recording them! It helps you remember what direction you intend to head in and you can check back on the list if you ever feel overwhelmed. If you are anything like me, then your memory is horrible. And let’s face it, simplifying your life is not always simple.

Tomorrow I am going to share with you a compilation of tips to simplify your life, which actually coincides with my list of simplicity goals. I encourage you all to check back soon and let us know about your own simplicity goals. This site thrives on collaborative wisdom. One mind can only do so much, but if we all put our heads together, amazing things can happen! Have an excellent Monday!

It’s creepily true. There is certainly a point of oversimplification. Even if it doesn’t mean death, it can mean there’s no real “life” in your life. Looking forward to tomorrow’s post!

“simplifying your life is not always simple” totally agree! sometimes even when we try to make it simple we don’t notice that we’re trying too much.. that takes the simplicity.

@ Dave – It can be a catch 22 at times. If putting in the effort to live simple is stressing you out… well that is just plain silly. Thanks for stopping by Simple Sapien!

‘morning, I stumbled over you while @various extrapolations of ‘complex[ity]‘ & ‘simplicity’. I wanted to say ‘don’t stop’: I also find your explanations rather … bald… Go Wonder.
