Simple Challenge #1: Don’t Spend Any Money Today
Welcome to this week’s Simple Challenge! To check out other simple challenges, please visit the Simple Challenge category.
The road to simplicity can be a difficult path at times. Attempting to travel it alone can be frustrating. That is why I have created the Simple Sapien Simple Challenge series to unite simplicity addicts such as yourself! Ok, you might not be an addict like me, but you are reading this article so I assume you want to simplify your life at least a little bit. If we can rally this simple living community and take steps towards simplicity together I think it will make the process that much easier.
Be sure to let us know how you are handling the periodic challenges in the comments section. Have questions? Need tips? Need help? Need inspiration? Need to vent? Post it in the comments!
I am always looking for simple challenge ideas. Send me a message and let me know if you have any ideas that can help people simplify their lives. And yes, you will get credit (and some link love) for your ideas. Thanks!
Don’t Spend Any Money Today
That is my challenge for you on this fine October day. This one will be easy for some and monstrous for others. One day of saved money can go a long way. Don’t give in to the temptations! The season may be fall, but we will not fall! Good luck on your simple challenge for the day!

I have already spent money today but I will take your challenge tomorrow. My lunch is already set aside and I have plenty of gas. Does giving the kids lunch money count?

I purchased gas this morning, and paid a lady at work for a fundraiser her child was participating in. Otherwise, nothing today. I’ll join Dave and do it tomorrow…

Yesterday I only purchased a roll of brown paper (for my sister!) and a bag of bread rolls (less than 5 dollars in total). Today it will be very easy to not buy anything as I’m not going out - I’m on study vacation!
I probably won’t be buying anything until the weekend, actually.
This is how I view it: Is it a need or a want? If it’s more of a want, then it can absolutely wait.
How about Yes or a No?
Say yes to what’s important & makes you happy and No if it’s not adding any value to your life whatsoever.
Oh, and I didn’t spend any money today.
Thanks,
Julia

Ha, I work out of a coffee shop so this one is a little difficult for me unless I want to hang at home with the cat.
Still, I regard a few cups of coffee (decaf with no milk or sugar of course!) as a reasonable price for “office” rent!

hmm…well i only spent $8 (with tip money, which i dont usually get) for lunch. and that’s a really good day for me. i’d like to try not spending any money for a whole week. at least not directly..because you could consider the fact that i paid for rent for the whole month of october already which would mean that that money would distribute out on a daily basis, for example. i suppose it would just start out with a day of spending a lot of money though–like putting gas in the car, buying a bunch of groceries, etc. anything that would get me through the whole week. is that a sign that i need to simplify my life?
I became stay home mom a few months ago. To add to that I am working on a startup now. I am proud to say I have been spending mostly on necessities. I figure we will have to continue to do that for the next year. So I really have not bought anything besides groceries and gas in a while ….
I am learning all new ways to save

It is a tough challenge! I am glad you are all doing so well with it
It’s pretty sad, but I actually have a harder time spending money than not spending money. I could use more of a balance…

I love a bold request like this. It is shocking how hard it can be not to spend for one day.
It really allows you to see how your life is attached to a debit card.
I really like this activity and think it would be great to create a habit where one day a week i will not spend anything. It causes me to be creative and be “awake” in my life.
