Simple Challenge #2: Cut Your Showering Schedule In Half

October 29th, 2008 by Jack Rugile - 10 Comments - Posted in Simple Challenge

Shower LessWelcome to this week’s Simple Challenge! To check out other simple challenges, please visit the Simple Challenge category.

If you shower twice a day, try showering once a day. If you shower once a day, try showering once every other day. If you shower once a week… well, maybe you should stick with once a week.

Oh your spouses and significant others are going to love you for this one. Just kidding, you won’t smell that bad, right? Showers and baths both use a ton of water. Conserve water and save money by milking your freshness for all it’s worth! That and a little bit more deodorant and you will be set, hehe.

I personally have already dropped my shower frequency to an amazing and disgustingly low number, so I am not going to reduce mine too much, for the sake of all the noses that will be around me. This challenge is more for the people who need a shower or two everyday. It is unnecessary!

Leave a post in the comments section and let us know how this challenge is going! Good luck!

I am always looking for simple challenge ideas. Send me a message and let me know if you have any ideas that can help people simplify their lives. And yes, you will get credit (and some link love) for your ideas. Thanks!

Sometimes you can get by with just washing your hair, face, and feet, especially when it gets colder. You can even put a bucket under your hair and collect that for your feet, I suppose.

I tried to see how long I could go without any sort of grooming while I was “between jobs,” and my record was six days. Keep in mind that that was six days of humid, Tennessean summer with a bicycle as my sole method of transportation. It was oddly liberating.

I think out of respect we need to take a shower at least once a day or every other day. The twice can be held back unless that person needs to work out, then it’s a must.

I think the rate at which people *need* to shower is too variable for an “every X days” rule, but it may be the best policy if you don’t have a close friend or family member to tell you that you smell before you go out. (There goes my last shred of datability. :p )

I do realize that some people enjoy showers though. I may consider showering once a day to be unnecessary from a hygienic perspective, but I don’t consider it a waste of water if it relieves stress and makes someone feel better about their day. (And I’m definitely attracted to that faint smell of soap and shampoo – you know, right after someone gets out of the shower but right before they start spraying all those other smells on.)

Yea, exercising can definitely play a big factor. And also, whether you are living with other people or not. Don’t get me wrong, I love a long, hot shower to relax. I am just trying to get people to think about whether or not they really NEED to shower. I think some people do it because it is their routine. Not because they need to get clean.

Brushing your teeth twice a day is a good routine and necessary for the health of your teeth. But showering is different. Our health is not affected by our showering. So just think before you shower and ask yourself: “Do I need this?”

I couldn’t agree more. I routinely shower because its habit. I work out almost daily so I couldn’t imagine not showering after a workout.

To simplify my life I would love to get rid of my car. I know Americans love our cars and I’m not different but if I could I would get rid of it and cycle everywhere. I remember reading an article on the cost of car ownership and its much higher than you would imagine even if your car is paid for.

@ Jesse – I could not agree more about getting rid of your car. I sold my car a few months ago and am loving it! It is a tremendous weight off my shoulders. The exercise and money saved from all the biking I have been doing is incredible. No more insurance, gas, parking, registration, accidents, maintenance, degradation of value, pollution, laziness, roadrage… the list goes on.

I was musing the other day about how English and European differ to South Africans (being that I am a South African living in London). Now I can add Americans to the list. I will not leave the house in the morning without first showering and most South Africans (and Australians) I know are the same. In my world, showering twice a day is something good you do to show that you love yourself. Of course, from an environmental perspective, I have perfected the art of a top-to-toe shower in under 5 minutes.
But then I hate the musty and quite frankly dirty smell of my colleagues. I prefer not to smell other people’s week old clothes or dirty hair but then again, I come from a very hot country where personal hygiene is a must.
    Interesting how people differ really…

@ Emm – That is interesting that it is considered something that you do to show that you love yourself. I never looked it at it that way. I am glad you have figured out the short shower… if only everyone would do that.

I work out daily (sweat like a pig and probably smell like one) but try to keep my showers short and to the point. Using timers and turning off the water while lathering up or washing your hair can make a big difference.
