Video Post: Live Your Day With Intention
This is a video about living your day with intention. It is easy to get overwhelmed or go off track if your day is not planned out. Living your day with intention will be much easier if you:
- Make a to do list for the day.
- Prioritize that list.
- Include mindsets.
- Be spontaneous later!
You can find videos in my Video Posts category or on my YouTube account. Here is a text version of the video for those of you who can’t play it or don’t have audio. Enjoy!
“Hey guys! This is Jack Rugile from Simple Sapien coming at you with another video post. Today I want to talk about living each day with intention. What this is, is just breaking down your life day by day. Don’t event think about the week. Don’t think about the month. Don’t think about years from now. Just take your life in small pieces, day by day.
What I do is when I wake up in the morning, once I get out of the flustered mindset of being in a dream, I’ll just pull out a little notebook paper and make a small to do list for the day. It’s more than just a to do list. It includes mindsets that I want to live by for the day and specific tasks that I need to get done. So I’ll wake up, take 5 minutes and do that. And the list will be prioritized for the tasks. All the important things that need to get done right away, I will get them done first. Get them done and out of the way. And then the less important ones will be done after that.
But there’s also a mindset section which is things that are general that you will be doing throughout the day that you want to remember. For example, eating healthy. I am not going to write down specific meals that I”ll eat, but I want to keep that general mindset in my brain throughout the day. Everytime I pull out the list, I will see that. So I will have eating healthy, things like being environmentally aware, staying positive. It is so easy for me to get negative when I have a bad argument with a girlfriend or a family member. Sometimes just staying positive can help with that. Being nice, I will write down. Be nice to day and don’t be negative. It is amazing how much this helps me because everytime I pull that list out I’m reminded of the mindsets I want to work on that day.
Having this list keeps me from floating around throughout the day, going from thing to thing, not getting anything done, and spending too much time on the fun stuff that can really be saved for later. This doesn’t quite make sense, but what I do is I plan on being spontaneous and free after those tasks are done. Planning to be spontaneous sounds kind of silly, but it works. I get everything I need to get done, done early and then I have this big chuck of free time at the end of the day where I can be lazy, I can have fun, I can work more on stuff, I can do whatever I want. I am completely free because everything has been taken care of.
It just helps keep me focused and living with intention. Breaking it down day by day makes it so much easier. Writing a week to do list can be kind of overwhelming. A day list is much smaller and much more managable. It’ has helped me a ton. I hope it helps you guys out too.

Hey, I might try jotting some things down while I’m waiting for the coffee to brew! Sounds like a good idea.
Are those your drums? In a band?
Great advice

@ SuiteJ – Awesome, I hope those tips help you out. They are my drums. I am not currently in a band. I am going solo for now
I hope to start one or join one in the near future, though. Do you play anything?
Hi Jack: What a great approach. I like how you plan time to be spontaneous
It does make sense though: a part of your day is structured in order to be able to take care of your to-do list, and then you have a “I can do whatever I want” part of the day. I set mini-intentions for myself throughout the day before each task. For example, “I now intend to have a pleasant walk to the gym, observing the scene and what goes on around me, and then have a great workout.”

It is all about finding balance right? I really enjoyed the post.
We all need to be reminded to take time out of our lives to be ourselves and have fun. We spend too much time being slaves to our to do list.

I agree that we should live and focus for the moment.
I like this quote by Alan Watts:
“This is the real secret of life: to be completely engaged with what you are doing in the here and now. And instead of calling it work, realize it is play.”

Jack, I love the way your integrating video into your blog – it really adds a personal touch! As to what you said – excellent stuff. Manageable is the key, and you’ve found something that is working very well for you – that’s great! In fact, I think I’m going to give it a try myself – a little more intention in my life can only help…
@Jack: Cool! You should play on a video.
Yeah, I used to play in bands for years. I don’t anymore though. Always got the acoustic near by though (I was a singer)
Cheers!

@ Marelisa – Heh, I am glad it makes sense to you! Some think that they contradict each other, but I don’t. Mini-intentions sound like a great mindset. Not only should we singletask, but we should PLAN our singletasks.
@ Michael – Balance is definitely key. Too much of one thing will make anyone crazy! We must conquer our to do lists, then move on and be free.
@ Julia – I love that quote. Sometimes just changing the way we look at our work can make all the difference. Make it a game or competition. Call it play and it will be.
@ Evelyn – Thanks for stopping by! I am glad that you are utilizing the same mindset.
@ Lance – Glad you like the videos, they are pretty fun for me. I love getting to know my favorite bloggers through video, so I thought I would do the same. You seem to have strong intention with your blog… it is incredibly inspiring. Keep it up. And who knows, maybe you will start recording some videos soon
@ SuiteJ – So great to see other musicians blogging! Do you have any recorded music on MySpace or anything like that? Maybe one day I will play music on a video… just need to write a song about simple living, lol!.
