Video Post: What Do You Wish For On Your Birthday?
Just uploaded another video on YouTube. This one is dedicated to my niece and my girlfriend. It is both of their birthdays today! Hope you both have a fantastic day. Also, I am curious what you readers wish for on your birthday. Post a comment below and let us know!
You can find videos in my Video Posts category or on my YouTube account. Here is a text version of the video for those of you who can’t play it or don’t have audio. Enjoy!
“Hello! Welcome to another Simple Sapien video post. Today I wanted to say happy birthday to my niece, Francesca, who’s turning 5 and my girlfriend, Kristen, who is turning 23 today. Happy birthday to you both.
On that subject, I was curious what you guys wish for on your birthday. For me, when I was a kid, it always seemed to be the material things that mattered the most. Like a snowboard, drum set, guitar, that kind of stuff. But now it’s turned into more situational type stuff that I wish for. For example, the well being of another person, success in your career, or meeting someone new. That kind of stuff.
And I was just curious what you guys wish for on your birthday these days, if you do wish for anything at all. Let us know what kind of things you wish for in the comments and once again happy birthday to my niece and my girlfriend today. Hope you all had fun watching the elections last night. That was exciting. I will talk to you guys soon. Thanks!”

In regards to this question, I think I can separate my wishes to different categories. Just to keep it simple, I think it would be - being happy in the present moment. Not only for myself but for everyone in general. Like you said, it’s not just having material things in your life, those will fade in and out but something that’s more substantial that will last for the long run.
Also, Happy Birthday to your Niece and Girlfriend!

I wish for success in my career and a happy family and healthy kids everyday :). The way I feel today, I wish I can just sleep all day on my birthday!
Mayas last blog post..Welcome - Please Come in!
I just celebrated my brother’s 18th birthday yesterday and my 23rd is coming up on December 7th. I wished that he would stop screwing around so much. He likes to get in trouble and that sort of thing.
For my birthday, yeah there are some material things that I want. However, I would like to get better at creatively expressing myself.
I feel that I’m in a rut because although I am communicating with people online, my offline relationships aren’t doing so good. Despite reading what so many people have to say and leaving comments, I feel largely disconnected and it’s negatively affecting me. I believe that if I were to strengthen my offline relationships with people, then I would feel better.
The big problem is that most of my friends are away at college and it’s difficult to get together these days.
Sorry if I went on a tangent; I just needed to vent a bit. Good-night, Jack!

Materially speaking I wish for an Olympic weight set so I can get stuck into this program I plan to blog about while doing - basically get a lot stronger while losing some weight. Which is something many people consider mutually exclusive.
On the internal and more important side of things I wish to be able to continue to refine my sense of joy in my life. Without that I feel everything material is but dust and a striving after the wind.
Well, you asked!

Jack, your priorities are way in the right place - that’s awesome!
I know my kids - and they always want the material things - right now — that’s a Wii, or a cell phone, or an Ipod - for them.
For me - I’m with you on this one Jack. I wish for things like motivation, or some inner peace, or just a day of doing nothing. And, like Maya - I’ll take a little extra sleep too! Oh, and since I am a little materialistic — let’s throw in some dark chocolate, maybe some specialty beers, and a visit to the local custard shop — I guess food and beverage are my wants!!
My birthday is coming up next week. My list was short this year. I have asked for what I feel to be essential items: a lab coat since I’m always cold at work, new running shoes so I can keep my stress relief, etc. I did ask for an Ipod as well but I do love music and it helps me get through the day.
You might find this odd, but the only thing I wish for on my birthday is a cake, and I don’t always get it. That’s what happens when you get to my age and you’re diabetic; sniff!

@ Julia - Thank you for all your comments lately. I love hearing from you! Thank you for the birthday wishes as well. Happiness is a wonderful wish. I hope it comes to you everyday, not just on your birthday.
@ Maya - Thanks for the comment! Those are all very important things to wish for. I hope they come to you.
@ AndySan - Nice new Gravatar, love the guitar! Expressing creativity is a very worthy wish. Vent all you like, I am all ears! I am sorry that things are not going well with your offline relationships. Online relationships can be amazing… but they can only go so far. I hope you can find a balance between the two and maybe make some new friends offline. It is so hard once everyone goes their separate ways after school… I miss my old friends a lot.
In the meantime, you can always be friends with me online! Just send me an e-mail if you ever want to talk. Take care!
@ Stephen - Thanks for checking out Simple Sapien. Good luck with your physical goals and finding joy in your life. I know you can have both! I just subscribed to your blog, liking it so far.
@ Lance - That is what your kids want now, but I am sure in time their wishes will change. Those are all valid wishes. Motivation is a biggy for me! Ok ok, and those specialty beers
@ Isabel - Those are good items to have for sure. Music is a powerful thing and if that is what you need to get through the day, then do it! Thanks for checking out my blog.
@ Mitch - Mmm cake, everyone deserves cake on their birthday. Even the diabetics! I am sorry that gets in the way sometimes.

I get pieces of cake here and there; she’s just worried that if I get a cake on my birthday that I’ll lose my mind and eat way too much. She’s probably right.

Brother!! I’ve been reading from the beginning of your posts back up to the present, and as of today I’m a little less than a week behind. Yay! I’m getting there! But I just had to stop and comment on this particular topic because I think wishes are powerful. When we have everything imaginable to choose from for a wish, what do we actually select? I have to say that I agree 100% with Julia’s comment. It’s all about happiness. I don’t know when it began, but for as far back as I can remember, every time I’ve wished on birthday candles or a shooting star or anything else I think is meaningful, my wish has always been the same six words - “I wish for happiness for everyone” Uh-oh, now that it’s not a secret, I hope it still comes true!!
Love you brother!!
@ Elizabeth - Yay, I am so glad you commented! Thanks so much for checking out my blog and reading it with such great depth. Wishes can definitely be powerful and they should not be wasted on petty things. I love those six words. That is a friggin good wish
Maybe if we can get enough people to wish for that exact same thing, it will come true. Let’s start a movement! Love ya Liz, thanks for stopping by!
