What Music Are You Listening To?

October 3rd, 2008 by Jack Rugile - 14 Comments - Posted in Inspiration, Miscellaneous

GuitarMy biggest passion in life is music. Whether it be listening to it or playing it, I just can’t get enough. It inspires me. It relaxes me. It invigorates me. It fuels me. It captivates me. It validates me. It challenges me. It understands me. It IS me.

But more importantly, I want you to share your music with me! What music moves you and entrances you? What music helps you get through the tough days? List your top 5 bands or musicians that are currently affecting your life. Here are mine:

  1. Opeth

Wow, that is a tall order to narrow it to 5! I am a guitar player and trumpet player, so I understand your passion. The band I am currently playing in is such a wonderful outlet for me. Well limiting 5 is tough so I will just mention 5 I am currently listening to. Here we go!

    1. Wilco
    2. O.A.R.
    3. The Racounteurs
    4. The Gaslight Anthem
    5. Brian Setzer (old school, I know)

    Honorable mentions:
-Jimmy Buffett (always makes me smile)
    – The Graveyard Stompers (because it’s my band and therefore my outlet for creativity!)

Great idea for a post! I love seeing what others listen to!

    Hey Jack!

I found your site from Zen Habits and have subscribed.

I have quite an eccentric taste in music, so here’s a list of the bands I’ve been listening to in no particular order:

    1 – White Stripes
There’s something in songs like “Seven Nation Army”, “Icky Thump”, “The Hardest Button To Button”, and “Fell In Love With A Girl” that’s probably illegal in Nebraska!

    2 – Al Di Meola
Whether he’s “Cruisin” or in a “Race With The Devil on a Spanish Highway”, Al can tell all those wankers to “Kiss My Axe”!

    3 – Marty Friedman
Marty’s my number-one guitar hero. His music is so eclectic! One minute, he’s doing a synth-heavy ballad and the next, he’s going balls-out on the guitar! I don’t care about the weird clothes he wears in Japan, he’s still awesome!!

    4 – Paul Gilbert
Marty Friedman may be my number-one guitar hero, but El Grande Pablo Gilberto comes in at a close second. He’s definitely “Individually Twisted”!

    5 – Queen
Yeah, I’ve been listening to Queen on and off for some time now. Freddie Mercury never ceases to amaze me!

Dude, you don’t even want to know. I have absolutely zero street cred, and still rock out to both Michael Bolton and Meat Loaf on a semi-regular basis.

Kina is the one artist I connect with on a really visceral, mood-altering level.

I could dig out some of the cool, indie music my friends throw at me, but seriously? I rely on the Stones, Bob Marley, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, and Al Green. And bad ’80s hair metal when I need to smile.

@ Reel Compton – I know, 5 is tough, but I wanted it to be a challenge as well. I suppose you can add more if you want. I GUESS I will let it slide this time :) Glad to see that there other musicians around on my blog! I used to be in a band for a few years, I moved recently though and I am just playing solo these days. Still very enjoyable though.

@ Dorian – Thanks for commenting! I will have to check some of those bands out, I have not heard any of them.

@ TheAndySan – Glad you found me through Zen Habits, I love that site. Cheers to Paul Gilbert and Marty Friedman! They are incredible guitarists. I was going to music school in California (Musician’s Institute) a few years ago. There was a sign up sheet for one on one lessons with Paul Gilbert… AND I MISSED IT! I wanted to die, but I am over it now hehe. Thanks for the comment!

@ Sara – Dude, I totally want to know. Anytime I hear the words Michael Bolton, I can’t help but think of Office Space and giggle :) Thanks for your honesty! 80′s hair metal has a place in everyone’s life in some way shape or I form I think. Heck yes.

I just finished reading Zen Habits post when I saw you as the first commentator, and found it interesting to answer your question.

Anyway, I do not know how to use any musical instrument but I really love to listen to good music.

Here are some of my favorites.

James Ingram – There’s no easy way…as my no. 1

Definitely, the King of Pop drives me crazy! I do not care about his personality or whatever. I like him as an artist…

Bands? Bee Gees and Queen are the top of my list.

Thanks for making me relax a bit!

I absolutely love music so its going to be difficult and a few of mine a Christian artist so you mightn’t recognize, but here we go:

    1. One Republic
Im loving their music at the moment and it just seems so real and relatable.

    2.Evermore
An aussie band that have been one of my favourite bands for the last couple of years. They have an amazing sound and I love their keyboard rifts.

    3. Hillsong
A sydney church that has become famous worldwide with their songs being played in churches everywhere. I am absolutely loving their new album.

    4. Coldplay
What can I say, other than they are an amazing band

    5. Brooke Fraser
This girl is so talented. She hit the New Zealand charts a couple of years ago and has such a unique sound!

@ Angel Cuala – I am glad this helped you relax! I love telling people about my favorite bands and doing all that I can to convince people to listen to them. Thanks for checking out Simple Sapien and leaving a comment!

@ Tom – Actually, the only one I recognize on that list is Coldplay. I need to expand my musical horizons I suppose. Thanks for sharing with us! I just checked out your blog and like what I am seeing so far.

I love this post. First time on your blog, but I like’s it, I do!

I was thinking about this the other day while riding the train into work, except I was thinking albums, I still haven’t narrowed down a top 10 for that, it’s darned near impossible!

But 5 artists that are rocking my world right now, that I can do (in no particular order):

    1. Sam Roberts – he’s Canadian, but for serious one of the greatest artists of all time, I am urging you VERY strongly to check out his album Chemical City!!!!

    2. The Music – Welcome to the North was awesome, Strength in Numbers is quite evolved from that, but still awesome!

    3. Tool – because Maynard always rocks my world anytime anyway I can get it.

    4. Electric Six – “Put a little mustard on that mustard!” Seriously check it out, it’s like hopped up rock with a disco flare and some of the most ridiculous lyrics ever delivered with a completely straight-face (I’m not talking Weird Al stupid, it’s sheer genius)

    5. The Kills – Midnight Boom really brought them back to their “a guy, a gal and a drum machine” roots. If you dig it, I really reccomend looking up Keep on Your Mean Side. My bubble gum pink copy of the Black Rooster LP is one of my most cherished!

Well right now I am listening to modest mouse as I read this blog. I have recently been listening to: The white stripes, ok go, dinosaur jr, interpol, buckethead

  11. Jack Rugile October 10th, 2008 1:03 pm

@ kristen – Thanks for sharing with us. I will definitely have to check out some of those bands.

@ drew – Buckethead is amazing isn’t he? He came to my hometown a few years ago and I could not go to the show! I was so upset!

That music is totally amazing, and I’m not even into that genre.
